Part three of MarzGurl’s 4Kids Month, just how far do all of these TV show edits go!?
…Maybe if Brock would OPEN HIS EYES once in a while, he’d realize he wasn’t eating doughnuts 😀
I just didn’t figure out why you didn’t displayed the infamous scene that one girl brought cookies to Roronoa Zoro on episode 3 (or 4, I don’t remember). It is the most ridiculous they got, and I can see you are a One Piece fan, so I didn’t saw that slipping out.
Good one, Marzgurl, keep it coming.
This was much better than the last one. I hope your commentary only improves in the fuher.
Rice-ball jelly donuts are the best kind! Ymmmm!
Toonzaki might be their new planned defensive shield against editing complaints: they’ll stream the unedited version, and put the edited version on Toonzai.
you know what’s real bad ab out the Maria part?
the game that sonic x arc was based on (Sonic Adventure 2, Adventure 2 battle was a remake for the gamecube) was released a several years before that episode aired in america. It already told us that Maria died. 4kids was acting stupid on their part.
4kids western shows are kinda good. They should sticik to western animaton. They allow death on those!
Or something similar example:
Chaotic, a show based on a card game (its more popular in Denmark and it sounds like D&D the card game)
In the second season M’rallian Invasion, the character Tangath Toborn (an antro lion) is frozen in time in a giant wave.
the last episode of the 3rd season, which was known as Secrets of the lost city, he returns but something similar to death happens to him.
It’s been a while since I saw that episode. They killed the antro lion, how Leomon of them : /
About the Maria incident, I think they believe that games are not to be taken seriously, so the kids will never understand that the girl died on the game, but they will confront death if showed on a cartoon.
While I’ve defended 4Kids in the past (mostly because I don’t see them as the devil–and I want WMAC Masters to finally get a home video release or at least an official website posting), including the last Terror, there are edits I don’t understand, like the food. In the Brock clip he had more than enough time to say “I made some Japanese-style rice balls in the shape of a triangle”.
Some names changes I get because it might be easier for kids to have a name that feels like someone they know. (Also a defense for the text changes to English–I don’t understand any removals that aren’t spelling/grammar issues.) I never knew what country Pokémon or Yu-Gi-Oh (4Kids version, never bothered to track down the original) was supposed to take place in, which actually helps with international release.
I also don’t understand why Sesame Street can let a character die but not other shows. I grew up with Battle of the Planets and Voltron among others, and while I easily escaped robot-commanded vehicles and androids iiiiiin the future future future…, by telling me the buildings were evacuated just in time they actually drew my attention to it more than if they had ignored it altogether.
Still, the 4Kids versions were at least entertaining if you didn’t know about the original version or at least were better than Saban’s Escaflone or DIC’s Knights of the Zodiac. The edits end up detracting from the final product, and that’s when I annoyed about kids TV edits.
The mere threat of you hanging up your jumpsuit made my heart skip a beat… 🙁
Another great episode. Or is it show? Issue? Whatevs. Either way, another great edition. And what can I say, sambo anime characters always make me chuckle. The obviously innocent, blatant racism is just amazing.
このようなことは昔の日本にもよくありました。birdman, fantastic fourなどのhannna something, sorry i forgot his name, などのアニメの翻訳は本当にひどいです。ぜひ一度見てほしいです。
Not to be too contrary but, with many of the edits you mentioned, I could quite understand the reasoning behind it.
Do you know how many kids were devastated at the ‘death’ of Optimus Prime in the original “Transformers” movie? ^_^
Guns as well is a touchy subject, so their removal can be somewhat justified.
Also, as a black man myself, I understand the removal of racial stereotypes (you know how much it always bugs me to see how a black man is portrayed with those ‘Sambo’-esque light colored lips?).
With any luck, seeing this cut/edited crap will inspire young anime viewers to seek out the original stuff (like “Kick Ass” and “Scott Pilgrim” did for me and the original comics, even though they were not exactly like the original product).
